Caring for Your Equipment - Concise Guide

This is a concise version of the Society for Psychical Research (SPR)'s guide to caring for paranormal investigation equipment.

Storage & Transport

  • Use protective cases (flight cases, camera bags), not carrier bags.

  • Avoid damp/cold storage; let devices acclimatize to prevent condensation.

  • Use silica gel packs to absorb moisture.

  • Remove batteries if storing long-term.

  • After each investigation: check devices, accessories, and cables.

  • Periodically test all equipment.

Handling

  • Place devices only on clean, dry surfaces.

  • Keep lenses/sensors free from fingers/dust (use proper cleaning materials).

  • Train others on proper handling during group/public investigations.

  • Keep records of who uses each item; use case checklists.

  • Properly coil, label, and store cables/accessories.

  • Maintain tripods, stands, and lights.

  • Don’t leave equipment in car boots for long periods.

Memory Cards

  • Use the correct type and speed rating.

  • Label/number cards to avoid mistakes.

  • Store in cool, dry, non-magnetic places.

  • Prefer multiple smaller cards over a few large ones.

  • Watch out for counterfeit cards.

Batteries

  • Battery failure = #1 cause of equipment failure.

  • Use correct battery type; keep spares ready.

  • Rechargeables: ~500 cycles; number them for even use.

  • Check expiry dates on disposables.

  • Avoid cheap, low-quality batteries.

  • Keep batteries warm/dry; don’t store loose.

  • Use correct chargers for each battery type.

Cleaning & Labeling

  • Avoid household cleaners that can damage devices.

  • Follow manufacturer’s cleaning instructions.

  • Label equipment with owner info/contact details.

  • Register warranties.
