Before You Measure Anything – Concise Guide

This is a concise version of the Society for Psychical Research’s quick guide on essential steps to take before making measurements during paranormal investigations. 


Purpose of Measurements

  • Observe and record prevailing conditions.

  • Document changes over time.

Choosing the Right Equipment

  • Only measure with a clear reason (e.g., verify an experience or test a hypothesis).

  • Select equipment appropriate for the variable being measured.

  • Ensure the device is of suitable quality and used per manufacturer instructions.

  • Know the normal and abnormal ranges for the variable being measured.

  • Don’t assume similar devices operate the same way; read manuals carefully.

Placement & Usage

  • Position devices/sensors optimally, guided by witness accounts or other info.

  • Avoid interference from nearby objects, appliances, or your body.

  • Prioritize the sensor providing the most useful data.

  • Minimize hand-holding of devices whenever possible.

Preparation & Maintenance

  • Read and understand the instruction manual.

  • Establish a routine for regular equipment checks.

  • Verify functionality before each investigation; don’t wait until the last minute.

Recording Measurements

  • Record data along with precise location and time.

  • Use pre-prepared forms for manual recording.

  • Never guess missing data; note any changes made to the records with reasons.

Using Measurements From Others

  • Treat data from witnesses or pre-installed devices the same as your own.

  • Confirm equipment type, location, and time of recording.

  • Check reliability, precision, and accuracy, even if results differ from your expectations.

Equipment Reliability & Settings

  • Be aware of possible malfunctions due to damage, user error, or batteries.

  • Verify units of measurement are consistent across devices.

  • Only use equipment for its intended purpose.

  • Download digital manuals for quick reference.
