Think Like a Detective: A Guide for Truth-Seekers
We must treat each case as unique, even if it resembles others. I learned this principle from the Comprehensive Course on Essentials of Investigation on Udemy (which, as of now, is no longer accessible). Treating cases this way helps us avoid bias and keeps our mind open to what really matters in the investigation.
It's easy to assume we already know the answer when something feels familiar, but familiarity can blind us if we’re not careful. Approaching every case with a fresh, unbiased mind is key to uncovering the truth.
It’s tempting to declare a truth prematurely to solve the case quickly, protect one’s image, or stay consistent with beliefs and prior statements. But that’s not truth-seeking. That’s convenient deception.
To truly seek the truth, develop a detective’s mindset:
🔍 Think Like a Detective:
Don’t trust your first impression. Your brain wants shortcuts. Resist it.
Watch out for the "What You See Is All There Is" bias. It limits your view.
Pause before concluding. Start with what you know—then investigate what you don’t.
List all possible explanations. More than you think exist—write them down.
Use the 6-Cs method to test and eliminate options:
- Collect info
- Check facts
- Connect dots
- Construct hypotheses
- Consider what else you need
- Consult a trusted ally for fresh eyes
Mind map your findings. Track how new info fits—or doesn’t.
Look for patterns, but stay skeptical. Avoid premature closure.
Bring in a devil’s advocate. Their doubt sharpens your insight.
Keep training. Stay humble, stay curious, and never stop learning.
Also remember the ABC:
🔍 Key Takeaway: The Investigator’s Mindset
🧠 Assume nothing
🧭 Believe nothing
🔎 Challenge and check everything
This mantra protects us from bias and keeps our minds open to what the evidence actually shows—not what we want or expect it to show.
I’ll elaborate on this in a later section. Thank you!
