Hypotheses are formed by considering natural explanations before delving into paranormal ones. For example, when investigating a ghost photo, initial hypotheses might include hoax, camera artifact, or an actual ghost. Investigators should start with the most likely explanations and test each hypothesis through research and experimentation.
The scientific method ensures that investigators rigorously test their hypotheses against known explanations. For instance, a ghostly sound should be audible if the ghost hypothesis is true, while a hoax should reveal detectable characteristics. If one hypothesis fails, the next most plausible one is tested. Forensic research mysteries: Involve re-examining past events or claims, like psychic investigations or alien abduction stories. These are typically solved through detailed research, without the need to visit a physical location.
Experimental investigations: Focus on testing claims of unusual abilities, such as psychic powers. These require well-controlled scientific experiments, often involving strict protocols to eliminate hoaxes or random chance.
Many investigations combine multiple approaches to solve the mystery.
When researching a mystery, approach it in three levels:
General Topic: Gain broad knowledge about the subject, including history, claims, and common hoaxes. This gives context to specific cases.
Localized Version: Focus on the history of the topic in the specific area you're investigating. For instance, understand regional sightings or patterns, like Bigfoot sightings in Pennsylvania.
Specific Incident: Research the particular sighting, event, or phenomenon you're investigating. This involves collecting firsthand accounts and local details.
Thorough research helps uncover hidden facts, such as recognizing a known hoaxer in a case. While skeptical literature is limited compared to believer sources, it can provide valuable insights. Avoid merely re-solving mysteries unless you have new evidence or a fresh perspective.

Perform the Test: Conduct experiments or comparisons to test the hypotheses. In the case of a claimed ghost sighting, try reproducing the phenomenon under controlled conditions. Testing also means comparing claims to independent information, like checking the consistency of a psychic's predictions.
Accept or Reject the Hypothesis: Based on the test results, either accept the hypothesis or explore alternative explanations.
The use of Occam’s Razor (favoring the simplest explanation) is key here. Additionally, scientific experiments must control variables (independent and dependent) to ensure validity. For instance, if testing a hypothesis about plants growing with different soils, all other conditions (light, water, temperature) must be controlled to ensure the soil is the only variable influencing the growth.
The process relies on critical thinking, research, and careful testing. By considering alternative explanations and rigorously testing each one, investigators can build a more reliable understanding of paranormal phenomena.
